Some people believe that online friendships are not real. However, online friends can offer real support: they listen to our problems, give advice and celebrate our successes. Many people also keep in touch with old friends thanks to social media. Therefore, online friendships can be as valuable as face-to-face friendships.

Most of our friends are usually about the same age as us. Older friends, however, can share their life experience and help younger people avoid mistakes. Younger friends, on the other hand, often bring energy and new ideas, and they can help older people with technology. Some argue that people of different ages have nothing in common. However, shared interests such as music, sport or volunteering can easily bring them together. For these reasons, we should not limit our friendships to people of our own age.

Many people think that friendships happen naturally and that schools have no role in them. This view ignores how much time students spend at school. Since a teenager spends a large part of the day in the classroom, school is where most of their friendships begin. It follows that schools are in a good position to help students build healthy friendships. For example, group projects make students who rarely talk to each other work together, and clubs bring together students with similar interests. Of course, a teacher cannot force two students to become friends. However, schools can create the conditions in which friendships grow. Therefore, schools should actively encourage friendship through group work, clubs and social events.
