The Air-Taxi: A Ride to the Future

Today, many big cities have the same problem: traffic jams. Engineers think that flying vehicles will help us in the future. One example is the air-taxi. It is a small electric aircraft. It can take off and land like a helicopter, so it doesn't need a long runway. An air-taxi will carry two to four passengers above the traffic.

Air-taxis will be quieter than helicopters, and they won't use petrol, so they will be environmentally friendly. However, there are still some problems. Air-taxis are very expensive today, and their batteries don't last long, so they can't fly very long distances yet. Engineers are going to test more air-taxis in the next few years.

1.a

Write two features of an air-taxi from the text.

Two Vehicles of the Future

Self-driving cars use sensors, cameras and computers. They can see other cars, people and traffic lights, so they don't need a driver. Many experts believe that they will reduce accidents because computers don't get tired or look at their phones. They will also help old people and people who can't drive. But a self-driving car can make mistakes when its sensors don't work well, for example in heavy snow.

Flying cars will travel above the roads, so they won't get stuck in traffic jams. They will take passengers to their destinations very quickly. But they will need special places to take off and land, and people are worried about safety: What will happen if a flying car's battery runs out in the air?

2.a

Complete the table with information from the text.

The city of Yeşilkent has 500,000 people. Every morning, there are long traffic jams, and the air is dirty. The city council has 500 million TL for a new transport project for the year 2035. The council wants a project that carries as many passengers as possible.

Project Cost Passengers per day Power Notes
Self-driving electric buses 200 million TL 60,000 electricity They can use the city's roads. They need new sensors at bus stops.
Air-taxis 450 million TL 3,000 electricity They need 20 new landing places on buildings. They are very fast.
A new metro line 900 million TL 150,000 electricity It takes eight years to build.
3.a

Which project can the council not choose? Explain with information from the text.

3 p
3.b

Which project is the best choice for the council? Give two reasons from the text.
